Many thanks to all who attended our inaugural Rail SIG. I wanted to take this opportunity to clarify some of the questions. Q. Can you model geotechnical data using any of these applications? i.e. groundwater level changes from survey readings? A. If you have data in gINT it can be reported on, traditionally this might be something like particle size distribution as a logarithmic graph. We can write out data as a simple XYZ file from any of the fields in gINT so that might Easting, Northing and something else like a contaminant level. This data can be triangulated in any of our Civil applications (gINT Civil Tools included) to give contours, not of height, but of concentration. This of a weather map with isobars, contours of equal pressure. Indeed this data could be displayed as triangles with a themed height to show “hotspots” of data, show me in red all of the data over a trigger value. I suppose I could have just said yes! Q. Does the surface generation have any statistical capability (eg kriging)? A. gINT Civil Tools has a surface smoothing tool which I believe uses a kriging algorithm. Q. Can faults be added manually to adjust the surfaces? A. Well, as we are making our own interpretation of the surfaces we can model what we like so faults can be added then. It would be useful to have the rock characteristics on the section drawing to help in our decision making. A. Is there a tool for joint system display? Q. If we have the information in gINT of the jointing then it should be possible to show it on the fence diagram. Ian Joyce Senior Application Engineer
